In the late 90's a few people came together and created a bot that recorded most internet chatter, and then filtered it for word patterns. Initially they planned to use this to read the stock market, but they soon found the computer making other predictions. The Web Bot has accurately predicted events such as 9/11, the Anthrax attacks in D.C., the NYC black-out, and most recently: early voting and the October market meltdown. This is the most fascinating thing I have ever read.
