German traffic police are flummoxed by a speeding driver who is mocking them … with a muppet puppet.

An Audi with British number plates has been repeatedly snapped travelling over the limit in Bayreuth, Bavaria but speed cameras have not been to identify the driver because it is a right-hand drive vehicle.

Instead the camera, which is designed to capture left-hand drive cars, zooms in on the front seat "passenger": a grinning plush toy.

The character appears to be Animal from The Muppet Show, but British newspaper reports also named Sesame Street favourites Grover and Ernie as the possible "accomplices".

Police have now released a picture in a bid to find the driver, who remains unidentified.

"Because this is a British vehicle we can never get a decent picture," a police officer was quoted as saying in The Daily Star.

"The driver has obviously worked this out because he has placed a large puppet in the passenger seat.

"This may be an example of the famous British sense of humour but it is still dangerous driving.”

In the image released by police, the car was clocked doing 155km/h in a maximum 120km/h zone.

Under German law, a number plate is not sufficient information to prosecute the driver.
